Engaging Heroes fans with a world class esports experience on the web
The Heroes of the Storm Global Championship (HGC) is the premier esports league for Blizzard Entertainment’s game, Heroes of the Storm. The HGC website is a hub for fans of Heroes of the Storm esports to stay up to date with the league schedule, their favorite teams, epic matches, and meaningful statistics.
I spent 1.5 years dedicated to designing end to end features for the HGC website. I worked on the visual style guide and designed major features such as team pages, player pages, and statistic pages. I also led multiple research efforts to discover new insights and to test our design choices.

Esports allows fans to engage with the game at a deeper level. Different fans have different motivations that drive them to consume esports.
With HGC, we focused on helping fans learn about the game and empowered them to follow their favorite teams and players.
One of the biggest motivators for why people watch esports is to improve their own gameplay. In Heroes of the Storm, players choose to play a single hero out of a selection of over 80 heroes. Each hero can be strong or weak depending on game balance changes over time.
The Hero Statistics page (above) illustrates the win rates of different Heroes in competitive play. Fans can use this page as a learning tool to identify the strongest heroes in the current game "meta." Armed with this knowledge, fans can draft better heroes to play in their own games.
Another key part of the user journey through esports is being able to follow teams easily. When the site was originally created, we relied on the Standings page alone for users to access individual Team pages.
After testing the site with users, we found that users needed an easier way to find individual teams. To address this need, we created a Teams page (above) that lists all the different teams in their respective regions. The new page made finding specific teams significantly easier for users.
